Farmers Market in Chelsea NYC & Brussel Sprouts Recipe

Just had a lovely conversation with farmer and owner, Malaika Spencer of Roots to River farm in Solebury, Pennsylvania.  I was walking by and happened upon this farmers market which I didn’t know existed right in Chelsea, on 23rd st. in Manhattan.

It’s a small one but had several produce providers, breads/pastries and several meat providers as well.  It even had an artisanal whiskey maker (which I didn’t check out 😉

The bad news is this was there last day for the season, but I still wanted to mention them.   Like many yogi’s I care deeply about our farmland and food quality and I always enjoy talking with farmers.  Malaika studied sustainable agriculture at Hampshire College in MA.  She interned on farms in NJ, Mass., Vermont, Ecuador and Costa Rica, before starting her own.  Roots to River does a CSA if you are in the area in PA.

So I got some kale &  little brussel sprouts, tiny but so flavorful, from her.  Here’s a quick way to make the latter:

Brussel Sprouts Sautee:  wash and clean sprouts, removing outer leaves or blemishes.  Then, lightly steam in a bit of water (like just enough to cover bottom of frying pan,) with lid on pot.  Then while they are firm but water is gone, add butter, or olive oil, turn up heat and saute briefly with a bit of garlic if desired, salt to taste.  Yum.
